Two books published by Clemson University Press have recently received recognition from national organizations.
“Falling to My Death: Vertical Rhetorics in Neoliberal Mexico” by José Ángel Maldonado received the Diamond Anniversary Book Award from the National Communication Association (NCA). The book combines memoir and cultural criticism of visual media, public rhetoric, and memory texts, as Maldonado critiques the various popular texts he encounters while travelling through Mexico after living in the United States as an undocumented immigrant.
The book was also recognized with two divisional awards from the NCA — the Book of the Year Award in the Death and Dying Division and the Outstanding Book Award in the Latino/a Communication Studies Division.
“Morbidities and ‘The Concept of the New Literature’” by Ramón Gómez de la Serna was named to the shortlist for the 2026 Translation Book Prize from the Modernist Studies Association (MSA). Translated by Nicolás Fernández-Medina, the book provides the first English translation of two of de la Serna’s major works, which were first published in Spanish in 1908 and 1909. These two early works are of singular importance not only in understanding de la Serna’s development as an avant-gardist, but also in analyzing Spanish literature within the broader framework of European avant-garde culture.
