“Tigers in the Archive” podcast features Dean Emeritus Harold Cheatham, a pioneer in counseling and higher education

The newest episode of the “Tigers in the Archives” podcast features an educator who has been recognized both at Clemson and internationally as a pioneer in his field.

Dr. Harold Cheatham came to Clemson in 1996 as founding dean of the College of Health, Education and Human Development and professor of counseling and education leadership. He was the first African American named an academic dean in Clemson University history, and he served in the role until retiring in 2001. He was named Founding Dean Emeritus of the Emeritus College at Clemson.

Podcast host Dr. Tara Wood, instruction and outreach archivist for Special Collections and Archives, interviews Cheatham about what he calls his “meandering” career path that brought him to Clemson.

Cheatham received a Bachelor of Science degree in psychology from Pennsylvania State University, a Master of Arts from Colgate University and a Ph.D. from Case Western Reserve University. He has received many honors and awards over the course of his career, including induction into the Society of Distinguished Alumni of Pennsylvania State University. In 2021, the American College Personnel Association (ACPA)-College Student Educators International named its Innovative Practice Award after Cheatham and presented him with a Lifetime Achievement Award.

“Tigers in the Archives” shares Clemson history through an exploration of materials in Special Collections and Archives. It is available on Apple Podcasts, Google, Spotify and other major podcasting platforms.
