Clemson Libraries has been tasked with managing and updating the Historic Objects Inventory for the University. The inventory is being conducted by Special Collections and Archives (SCA).
Previously, property control identification decals (barcodes) were placed on objects, and those objects were inventoried and their condition monitored. Artifacts on the Historic Objects Inventory cannot be removed from it.
These objects may be located in the public areas of buildings across campus or in individual office spaces. At this time, items are not being removed or taken from their current locations unless there is an immediate concern about the object’s condition; they are simply being recorded so that Special Collections and Archives has an accurate inventory of what objects the University has, where they are located, and their condition.
SCA is asking that faculty and staff help to ensure that objects remain in their location and are properly maintained. Historic objects should not be moved or placed in storage without seeking guidance from SCA.
A historic object is defined as “a three-dimensional artifact, excluding documents, photographs, and other archival materials, that has a demonstrable connection to the history, activities, traditions, or development of Clemson University. Historic objects are tangible items that were made, modified, or used by humans and are preserved because of their historical, cultural, archaeological, artistic, evidential, or commemorative value.
Historic objects may be associated with individuals who contributed to the development of Clemson University, represent traditions or aspects of campus life, document the University’s educational, research, athletic, military, or administrative activities, or commemorate significant events in Clemson’s history.”
Department chairs and unit directors will receive a survey soon so that they can report if they have historic objects in their buildings or offices. The SCA team appreciates everyone’s assistance during this process.
