Social Media Listening Center, Writing Lab moving into Cooper Library

The Social Media Listening Center (SMLC) and the Clemson Writing Lab will both have new homes in the R.M. Cooper Library in the fall semester. Work on both spaces will take place this summer, along with several other renovation projects slated for the library.

The SMLC is an interdisciplinary laboratory that uses cutting-edge technology and software to monitor, measure and engage in social media conversations across most platforms. It provides learning, teaching and research opportunities to students and faculty, as well as consultation and analytics services to external partners. The center will be moving to the fifth floor of Cooper Library, next to the Starbucks, and its new location will feature an interactive video wall, collaborative work stations as well as offices and meeting space.

The Clemson Writing Lab provides resources, support and peer consultations to students, faculty and staff to help them become more effective writers. It will be located on the third floor of Cooper in the space where the 301 office and 311A conference room are currently located.

Other upgrades happening in Cooper this summer include:

• Continued work to install glass walls and a door at the Adobe Studio (5^th floor), which will improve security for the space. Once the door is in place, the Cooper Makerspace equipment will move into the studio, giving students a one-stop shop in Cooper Library for digital and creative projects.
• Complete renovation of the Brown Room (4^th floor) to include new paint, carpet, furniture, white board and upgraded technology. That renovation has already begun, so the Brown Room is unavailable for use until work is completed around mid-August.
• Technology upgrades in the Scholars’ Lab (4^th floor) to add larger interactive digital displays to the walls.
• Adding two group study rooms to the East Learning Commons (4^th floor).
• Additional shelving for the popular reading, DVD and audiobook collections in the West Learning Commons (4^th floor). Collections items will be moved to the perimeter of the room, opening up more space in the center of the room for seating areas and hosting events.
• Infrastructure upgrades to improve safety and security, including the fire alarm system, lighting controls and new security cameras.
