A new reading room on the second floor of the R.M. Cooper Library has given new life to some historic furniture.
Tables from the university library that was located in Sikes Hall from 1926 to 1966 have been moved into the silent study area behind the elevators on the second floor of the Cooper Library to create a traditional reading room. The reading room provides a space for study or reading library materials in a quiet setting.
The tables were previously located on the third floor of Cooper but were moved into storage in 2019 after renovations were done to create a common study area with new furniture. The reading room was created as a way to incorporate the tables back into the library, due to feedback from faculty.
More enhancements will be coming to the room, including lamps and wiring in each table to provide power outlets for laptops and other devices.
Clemson Libraries Dean Chris Cox said he wants to use the room as a pilot to see if Clemson students want and need this type of study space. To submit feedback on the reading room, please use the libraries’ online suggestion form.
