Completing Clemson History

Completing Clemson History is the first book in a multivolume series that reexamines and uncovers the untold histories of individuals and events that are essential to the Clemson University story. With an interdisciplinary team of scholars, this first volume unearths the layered history of the Clemson landscape beginning with the Indigenous history of the region and concluding with the story of Clemson’s 1981 National Championship in football. The volume fills out Clemson history by complicating its origin story, thereby providing a fuller understanding of the institution’s development over the years. These edited volumes will be of interest to Clemson faculty, staff, students, administrators, alumni, and members of local communities as well as people who are interested in South Carolina history.
About the Editors
Joshua Casmir Catalano is an associate professor of history at Clemson University. He is an interdisciplinary scholar of early America and Native American history who employs archival, computational, and archaeological research methodologies to examine the role of language and symbolism in the process of settler colonialism. He publishes work in a variety of traditional and innovative formats. He has served as a Principal Investigator on numerous grants from the National Park Service in collaboration with Indigenous Nations and community partners.
Rhondda Robinson Thomas is the Calhoun Lemon Professor of Literature at Clemson University whose interdisciplinary work focuses on early African American literature and culture. Her current public humanities projects which are grounded in meticulous archival research with a strong community engagement component document and share the history of convict laborers at Clemson, the fugitivity of enslaved Black women and girls during the antebellum period, and the history of Black people at Clemson. She is principal investigator on grants from the Mellon Foundation, National Park Service, National Endowment for the Humanities, and SC Humanities in collaboration with community partners.
