It is the fourth collection from the Georgia-based poet Rupert Fike, a distinctive Southern voice with a witty, countercultural sensibility. Most of the poems in <em>Among the Furies<\/em> are set in the rural South, from the \u201cdead-sofa push-off pit\u201d at the county landfill to the \u201cParanormal Romance aisle\u201d at the local bookstore. Fike draws on a wide range of literature and popular culture (from John Milton to murder ballads, from Jane Austen to Kenny Rogers), yet his conversational poems remain grounded in relatable experiences of growing up and growing old.
