Scheduling Information

Fort Hill is open Monday through Friday 10 am to 4:30 pm. Students will scheduled for shifts, either: 9:30 am - 1 pm or 1 pm - 4:30 pm, depending on their class schedule and organizational needs.

Position Description and Duties

The Department of Historic Properties is home to three historic houses, which are open to the public as house museums. Collectively, these homes preserve parts of campus that played a pivotal role in shaping local, state, and national history. Student guides will be responsible for leading tours at Fort Hill National Landmark. Guides communicate carefully researched historical information to help connect the public with the site’s rich history. Tours include information on 19th century inhabitants, enslaved laborers, architectural history, and other significant events related to the history of Fort Hill and Clemson University. Guides will provide visitors with historical context through engaging educational narratives, while maintaining a respectful atmosphere. Guides engage with visitors of all ages, addressing their questions, and adapting the tour to cater to different interests and levels of knowledge. Key responsibilities: Guides will be given time to thoroughly studying the history of the house, its occupants, significant artifacts, and the surrounding area to accurately answer visitor questions. • Greeting visitors and leading guided tours through the house, explaining the historical significance of the home throughout the tour. Guides should exhibit good time management skills while guiding visitors through the historic home. • Manage the flow of tours in a timely manner while communicating tour expectations and ensuring visitor safety. • Be familiar with the safety procedures for the home. Know where alarm panels, first aide kits and fire extinguishers are located. • Responsible for opening the house and grounds at the beginning of the day and securing the home at the end of the day. • Maintain the security of the museum’s collections pieces by following established rules and procedures. • Using storytelling techniques to bring the past to life, making historical facts relatable and interesting to the tour group. Other responsibilities include: • Assisting with social media, blog posts, or other marketing and outreach efforts. • Coordinating with staff on other light, administrative tasks as assigned. • Assisting with special events or educational programs related to the historic house, when needed. • Assist with light curatorial housekeeping when needed.

Additional Information

We are seeking students with: • Strong interest in history, historic preservation, museum studies, and or history education. • Excellent communication and public speaking skills • Ability to research and learn new information quickly • Comfortable interacting with diverse groups of people • Attention to detail and ability to follow established tour guidelines • Availability to work flexible hours
